How zinc helps the performance of the human body

Zinc plays fundamental biological roles in the immune system, healing, growth and digestion, and as such performs important roles in aiding the maintenance and health of the human body. Essentially, Zinc is a vital trace element that is required for the efficient and normal functioning our bodies.

The properties of zinc are almost unique in that not only is it a powerful antioxidant, but it is also a key ingredient for many important biochemical reactions in the human body. As an antioxidant, zinc ions dissolved in our blood and in our cells help protect us from harmful oxidizing agents known as free radicals which reduce the performance of the body. There is strong evidence to suggest that antioxidants play a key role in reducing stress, preventing strokes and minimising the effects of ageing.

Zinc is a component of many body enzymes, which play an essential metabolic role within the body. Enzymes vastly increase the rate of reaction of the thousands of biochemical reactions that constantly take place in our bodies. In this role, zinc aids the metabolic pathways in the body thus reducing the effects of fatigue after exercise by assisting the breakdown of harmful lactic acid in muscles. Hence the performance of our bodies in exercise as well as daily activities can be severely impaired if we have insufficient zinc intake in our diets.

Additionally, zinc deficiency can cause a permanent condition known as Diabetes Mellitus, liver and pancreatic problems, as well as poor night vision and wound-healing.

It is important to note that although zinc plays a vital and fundamental role in our bodies, it is nonetheless only required in small amounts. The typical adult dosage of zinc is only 9 mg daily, although this also depends on body mass and exercise. Common sources of zinc include dairy products, nuts and wholegrain cereals.

In conclusion, zinc performs a myriad of functions with regard to the performance and maintenance of the human body. Whilst only small amounts of zinc are required in our diet, even a slight zinc deficiency can lead to serious health problems. It is due to the central role zinc plays in our metabolism that makes it the most important trace element mandatory for sustaining our bodies in peak healthy condition.
