Recently I overheard a conversation between two young women in which one of them was criticizing a colleague for attempting to share her religious beliefs with her. She made an interesting comment that eventually led to the writing of this article. She said that she believed in God when she was six years old, but then became an atheist as she matured and learned more. The question in my mind of course was whether God had changed, or had she? In response, I've come up with this list of the top ten things we need to know about God:
1. God is not accountable to us. Whether we choose to believe He exists or not does not alter the fact that He has always existed and will always continue to exist. Some have said of Him that God is on His throne and He's not nervous. But perhaps we should be. It does not matter how many self-declared atheists write books denying His existence, He will not cease to be. In fact, such futile endeavors only draw attention to the fact that He created us with a spiritual dimension that enables us to comprehend the conceptual aspects of life that are intangible. Ultimately, what we think of Him is inconsequential to Him, but very consequential to us as we know from our early childhood years when we gave Him more thought, that we are accountable to Him in some way, whether we choose to dwell on it or not.
2. The only way we can know God is if He chooses to reveal Himself to us. At this point in history, the only record of His speaking to us is found in the Scriptures we've come to know as the Bible. There are things we can determine about God through nature and creation, but if we want to know about who He really is, we need to access His word to us. The Bible authoritatively presents itself as God's word and has no equals amongst all other writings, be they religious or other. Those who view the Bible to be allegory can be compared to those who think that labels on medication are false or unimportant. The consequences of ignoring them can be dire or fatal. God is so far beyond human comprehension that it's quite foolish to think we can somehow get our mind around Him without the benefit of His word to us.
3. God is personal; He is not just some mysterious force. He does not have human characteristics; rather we have some Godlike characteristics. We do not create God in our own image as some would have us believe, but we are told in the Bible that He in fact created us in His own image. We are instilled with eternity in our hearts because He
