Life is never going to be smooth-sailing.
I hear some gasps. What? Won't life be a bed of roses after I become a christian?
As I drape my shoulders around you, I assure you gently but unfortunately, that this will not come true because life is... well, never going to be smooth-sailing.
Ever.
Truth is, every christian is struggling with some issues. Most of us look fine, but it is fundamentally wrong to believe that 'perhaps someone may not be struggling with anything at all'.
So as you push my shoulders away from you for being such a wet blanket, I look you in the eye & once again, very gently assure you of something else: That as children of God, it is possible to live a victorious life in this chaotic world.
Before you ask the 'how', let me first ask you - what does living a victorious life as a child of God mean to you? Does it mean that you will have a smooth career path mapped out for you & that whatever bad things come, God will cushion it for you? Does it mean that we will not get diseases? Does it mean that we will get what we ask for?
Well, these may come with Christianity but God is not a genie in a bottle. And that doesn't mean 'victorious living'.
So What Does it Mean?
Then, what does 'victorious living' mean to you & me?
1John 5:4-5 says 'for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the son of God.'
How about John 16:33? I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.'
I am not a theology student so I am not qualified to dissect the the verse for you but at least to me, this is what I think - that to live victoriously as a child of God means loving God despite of your circumstances & not allowing the situations to take control of our lives.
The bible also points out in other verses that there is never going to be any peace in this world & we are not to expect a smooth or trouble-free life because as children of God, we will face even more troubles. Sounds distressing? Burdened? Don't be. The following stories might shed some insight as you ponder on this question. These stories are real life people - christians - struggling with the pain of reality but victorious in their own walk with God.
May you be encouraged.
