It's a little hard to believe that there is anybody who has not seen Scrooged, it's one of those films that turns up each and every year about this time. If you have never seen this specific version of the Scrooge tale (A Christmas Carol) you'll no doubt be exactly aware of how the story goes. During December TV airs it, shops stock it and 9 out of 10 Christmas's it ends up back in retails top 20 charts, there is a strong chance that someone you know will end up with this for Christmas.
Frank Cross (Bill Murray) is a TV executive with more than a casual similarity to Ebenezer Scrooge, ironic I guess that this year's big TV project for Frank is a live variety show style screening of A Christmas Carol. This Christmas finds Frank at his worst ever, cancelling the office party, sacking staff, and being genuinely uncharitable. As Christmas Eve arrives, the limits of his nastiness reach breaking point; it seems it's time for Frank to sit back and have a look at his life and figure out exactly where it all went wrong, thanks to four ghosts of course.
Scrooged is a really pleasant family movie, for 20-30 something's it really was the closest thing we have to a Christmas story from out time, unless of course you include out of sorts comedy horror Gremlins. The nice thing about Scrooged is that it is genuinely funny, and even now nearly 20 years after it was first released it still puts a smile onto my face. It's not surprising that it's such an enjoyable movie, after all with the exception of the movies timeline it's pretty much an identical story to the original Christmas Carol.
The movie moves at a good speed with jokes that are aimed at all areas of the audience, so there are never moments when you're looking elsewhere waiting for the world to eat you up while your kids are enjoying the film. I defy anyone not to sit in a room while this is on and not be drawn into the movies magic. Even the more detailed and drawn out scenes in the movie are given humorous spins, while still managing to spell out the serious parts of the films plot. And here is the big message of the movie "Do unto others as you would expect they should unto you". And that's the big kill for the movie; it actively encourages you to do good, not a bad thing nowadays when kids seem to get as much pleasure being unpleasant as they are pleasant. So in Scrooge you have good quality entertainment, humour, good acting, and most importantly a tale of morality. I always believe that a good family movie should
