No, the confederate flag should not be banned for two very important reasons. Number one, it has always been said that you need to read and learn all you can about history otherwise you are bound to repeat it. Number two, when you do away with something for whatever reason it is done because you no longer need, want or to be reminded of it. So much of American history is tainted with dark ideals and dirty deeds that we are always wanting to do away with them. We always need to remember the fundamental lessons that we learned from everything that we experience whether it is pleasant or horrendous. We do not have to like the lesson, we don't have to want the lesson our only requirement is to learn from it. These are the fundamentals that shape us into worthwhile individuals. A flag is just that, a flag what it means to one person is not what it means to everyone. Some people see the confederate flag as an affront to African American culture because during the time of it's prominence there was slavery. Like or not, slavery is a part of the African American history and African Americans need to remember this and not get angry so much as get empowered. It is something that has been ended and as a people African Americans are becoming stronger with every passing decade. Not to mention with all the youth that are finding one another in various relationships it is a teaching tool. This is something we are losing as a people (Americans) teaching. There are so many youths out there that don't even know who made the American flag. How many stars it originally had let alone what those stars stand for. We have to stop running and hiding from our past because it was uncomfortable.
We are all accountable for our own beliefs. We are all capable of making changes and strides in our growth but, in order to grow, in order to go any further in our lives we have to know where we have been. We need to inspire our children to want to know all there is to know about us as parents, neighbors, relatives and ancestors. It is our jobs to teach them how to keep the things that we did or continue to do from becoming a blight on our history. If we don't keep all the things in plain sight that made us what we are today, how can we expect them to create a better tomorrow? How can we teach our children not to hate others, judge others, imprison others, discriminate against others just because if we are too cowardly to admit that we did it first? No, I don't think the confederate flag should be banned. What purpose would that serve? What lesson would that teach?
