either chronic bronchitis or emphysema in the past.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
There is a metabolic disorder known as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency which has a known association with the development of emphysema. Alpha-1 antitrypsin is an enzyme made in your body which acts in the skin, lungs, and liver. Alpha-1 antitrypsin acts to destroy and other enzyme known as elastase. Elastase is an enzyme used to moderate your immune system. If the elastase is not properly broken down by alpha-1 antitrypsin, it will become overactive and cause damage to the tissues of the lungs, liver, and skin. This subsequent damage will lead to the development of emphysema. Fortunately this condition is quite rare.
Although it has already been mentioned, the absolute best way to reduce your risk for developing chronic bronchitis or emphysema is to quit smoking. Starting a regular exercise program has also shown significant benefit. Of course exercise and reduction of smoking are good for many other areas of your health in addition to reducing the risk to your lungs.
If you have any questions about your risk for developing either chronic bronchitis or emphysema, be sure to speak with your physician. You can work with your doctor to develop a plan to quit smoking, or to develop an exercise program appropriate for you. The sooner you begin to take care of your lungs, the better condition they will be in as you get older.
