Five in a million
Out of the millions of books out there, here are five must-reads. These books were chosen not because of their longevity on a best-seller list, but because they are five of the most influential books ever published. These books changed their society and continue to shape society today. Something that powerful certainly deserves a second look.
1) The Bible
Trying to summarize the influence The Bible has had on the world is a daunting task. It's continuing impact is unrivaled by any other literary work. It stands as a philosophical, ethical, historical, and legendary work throughout centuries. It is the best selling book of all time, is printed in hundreds of languages and countries, and is widely accepted as the first book to ever be printed.
The Bible is not a typical book in that one author did not write it all at the same time. Rather, it is a collection of writings, called 'book's, written by a number of authors. Some of the first parts of the Bible may have been written down as early as 1200 B.C., while the later books are from the 2nd century A.D.
Today The Bible is still used by a variety of religious groups and denominations of Christianity. Its influence, however, extends beyond Christianity. The Bible has become a widespread moral guide as well as a source for inspiration, comfort, and wisdom.
2) 1984, George Orwell
George Orwell published a book of both commentary and prophecy. He painted a grim picture of a hypothetical world in the future that was dominated by a totalitarian government. The government had reign over every aspect of its constituents' lives and thoughts and even controlled their memories, and the history of the nation was even altered. The Party slogan touted, "Who controls the past, controls the future, who controls the present controls the past."
Political tragedies and commentaries are published frequently, but this novel has remained in the forefront of what can go wrong, and what will go wrong in a nation if a government has the chance to become too powerful. 1984 offered innovative insight and portrayed a chillingly credible dystopia in the hands of corruption. With the help of Big Brother and the Thought Police, Orwell scared the population so much that there was even advocacy to skip the year 1984. It inspired large-scale social unrest and realization of what could be the future in the hands of technology and unbridled government power. The prophetic nature of this book is what makes 1984 one of the best and most
