Assessing the career of Manchester United's manager Alex Ferguson

Some players were born to manage some were not. Sir Alex Ferguson makes a superb manager. He has won more trophies than any ever manager in English Football and has been at the helm for Manchester United for more than 1000 matches. He is the second longest serving manager of Manchester United after Sir Matt Busby.

So where did it all begin?
He was born in Govan, Glasgow. As a player he turned professional in 1964 and joined Dunfermline as a centre forward. After playing for Glasgow Rangers; Falkirk and Ayr he gave up playing in 1974 to manage East Stirling. He moved on to St.Mirren but was sacked as he fell out with the Chairman. In 1978 he was employed by Aberdeen. At the time Aberdeen had not won the Scottish championship for 20 years. This was probably where his career really took off. He did not have a lot of resources but in the 1980's he turned Aberdeen around, into the Celtic and Rangers of today. They were the team everyone feared to play against, they were the team everyone wanted to beat.

As well as numerous league and Scottish cups his team beat real Madrid 2-1 in the Cup Winners Cup in 1983. Thus far the last Scottish club to win a European Trophy. In 1986 he was asked to come and manage Manchester United but his start was not good. They lost to Oxford United. The next few years were a struggle too but in 1990 they won the FA CUP and this was the start of good things to come.

People who have worked with him have described him as having a fierce competitive spirit and a temper to match. They call it "The Ferguson Hairdryer" when he gives them a piece of his mind. One such incident was after Arsenal beat Manchester United 2-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Ferguson kicked a shoe and it just happened to hit Beckham. Beckham informed the media it was an accident and Ferguson was quoted as saying:

"It was a freakish incident. If I tried it 100 or a million times it couldn't happen again. If I could I would have carried on playing!"

David Beckham on Ferguson:
"Alex Ferguson is the best manager I've ever had at this level. Well, he's the only manager I've actually had at this level. But he's the best manager I've ever had"

In 1999 they won the Treble: The Premiership; The FA Cup and the most coveted trophy of all the European Championships Cup. The Treble has been called the impossible dream. To win any one of these competitions would be a success. To win all three was unthinkable. But it had been achieved under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Personally I thought the Bayern
