I believe the best way to start this article is to explain the most obvious differences between traditional Thai massage and the two more popularly known methods, Relaxation and Therapeutic.
Firstly, all three styles should be considered therapeutic, as throughout the process of each, the body and the muscles are manipulated in such a way as to bring about feelings of comfort and relaxation (including the more aggressive Active Release Technique, whose intended end result is the same). The lymph nodes are stimulated and ultimately release undesired toxins from the body (assuming you take the advice of your massage therapist and drink the suggested glasses of water!) Self care is the link that all of these styles share, whether undergoing the process of rehabilitation after a physical injury, of seeking the comforting and calming effects after an emotional injury (or simply in the name of well-being), or eager to drink from the fountain of energy which is within you at all times.
It is at this point, that the similarities end. Therapeutic massage does not take place in a candle lit room with aromatherapy oils, as the goal desired throughout rehabilitation sessions is not a feeling of peace, cultivated with relaxing ambiance, as is the goal in Relaxation massage, but a healing of the deep wounds of the body's muscle and connecting tissues, with a "down to the basics, striving to get your body better" technique and attitude. Thai massage, on the other hand, incorporates elements of both methods. Though it is performed in a subtly lit space, and a feeling of ease is desirable, there is certainly a focus on the muscles and connecting tissues as well. It could be considered a fine blend of the more contemporary styles.
In addition to a focus on well-being and therapeutic restoration, Thai massage incorporates an element of spirituality, if you will. Certain points within the body are specifically stimulated in order to clear "meridians" of stagnant energy. The meridian system has been described as a series of rivers which flow through the body, delivering vital life force energy to all areas. This life force is called Qi/Ki/Chi (all pronounced Chee), and it flows though each of us. It is possible, however, for this energy to be blocked through physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual trauma or dis-ease, and it is therefore necessary to clear the passage ways of this stagnant debris and get things moving again!
I remember my first experience with Thai massage very clearly,
