The value of networking when starting a business

can provide referrals. The level of formalization varies, as does the cost of joining, but such peer groups can be very useful. You are not networking with potential customers here, so much as linking in with other suppliers in related fields.

To start e-networking, you obviously need access to a computer and to the Internet. Many businesses will have these as an essential piece of office equipment. However, if you don't, check out the local Internet cafe or library facilities. See if your local business guild has a terminal that can be used for free or for a relatively low cost. Joining the e-networking sites is generally free, since their money is made from advertising revenue.

Being Visible

As well as making contact with people, you need to be sure they can make contact with you. Always have some business cards, or a small leaflet, to hand out if you are asked for it. With technology developments, this can be a simple, relatively low-cost thing to do.

For many people, the Internet will be the first port of call when looking for someone. So spend some time and money on getting your website in place. It doesn't have to be complex at this stage. It's merely going to act as an electronic business card. You can use the templates offered by your ISP. I wrote my current website in 10 minutes. Not flashy, no animation, but if anyone is looking for me, they will find me.

Summary

Networking is a key part of promoting your business, especially during the start-up phase. Let's finish with a round-up of the key points to remember. If people don't know you exist, they won't come looking for your services. Practice 'selling yourself' in one or two sentences. When someone asks 'what do you do', have a short, concise answer ready - it's more memorable that way. Explore the different options for networking: social, business, face-to-face or e-networking. Take the opportunity to 'try before you buy' and find out what has worked for other people. Don't be disheartened if your networking doesn't produce instant sales; it's all about spreading awareness and establishing a presence for the future. Make sure people can find you when they need you; it may be next week, next month or next year but they will come looking at some point.
