Travel budget: Tips for saving money on vacation

Many folks think it is wrong to try and save money while on a vacation. After all, this is why you have been saving pennies, cutting coupons, working over-time, leading up to your big trip. Is it possible to have a great vacation yet be frugal in your efforts to save? The answer will depend on each individual and this can be discussed and agreed upon as your vacation is in the planning phase.

Compromise and moderation are good equations to have in a successful formula that will equal fun, enjoyment, excitement, while not leaving you hitch-hiking back home.

Determine where you are going and how long you will be there. Inquire about bargains for spending multiple nights or weekly rates. Do not trade safety for dollars. Study the area on line where you will be staying, read feed back and ratings of hotels you are interested in.

Hotel food can be very expensive, take along a cooler filled with snacks, drinks, water. Soft drinks and bottled water can cost over a dollar each and this will add up quickly. You may wish to take along your own coffee and coffe pot if one is not offered in the room.

If you have children the cooler with snacks will pay for itself immediately. Try stopping at a convenience store to buy drinks and snacks for four. When you are finished, you will see that you could have eaten a hot meal for the price of junk food. Do this a couple of times a day and watch your vacation dollars fly out the window.

Look for restaurants where kids eat free. You will be surprised how many adults can actually share a meal and still be full. Leave off the tea or soda, get water and you will save about four dollars per couple per meal.

Use coupons where possible including the hotel. Many bargain chain hotels offer on-line coupons or vouchers, see if these can fit into your schedule as sometimes deals are valid certain days of the week.

Hotel and Bed & Breakfast rates are cheaper during certain times of the week. If your schedule is flexible, this is another way to save big bucks on lounging and have more to spend on items or activities you deem more important.

Take advantage of the many amenities your hotel offers. Hotel chains are making it hard for you to leave the properties with various perks designed to keep you coming back. Hotels are in great competition with each other, so use the free services rendered such as swimming pools, free breakfast, free work out centers; and don't forget to ask if your hotel offers golf packages, coupons to local restaurants, movie theaters,
