Movie reviews: Ocean's Eleven

Ocean's Eleven

Inspired by the 1960's original, Steven Sodenbergh directs this contemporary version of Ocean's Eleven. As with the first film, this flick's cast is just as impressive. It stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheedle, Andy Garcia and Julia Roberts.

Clooney plays Danny Ocean, a smooth, charismatic thief who's just been released from prison. Only twenty-four hours into his newfound freedom, Danny has already hand picked an eleven-man crew for a new job. The job is to steal over $150,000 from three casinos during one madcap evening.

The hotel/casinos are owned by Terry Benedict, a ruthless, dangerous man who is played convincingly by Andy Garcia. We learn that Benedict is dating Ocean's ex wife, Tess, played by the gorgeous Julia Roberts. Danny hasn't mentioned this fact to the rest of the gang, which adds a little more depth, and edge to the plot.

Brad Pitt takes on the role of an ace card sharp while Matt Damon becomes a master pickpocket. Together with Don Cheedle's character, a demolition genius, this latest Hollywood rat pack boasts a genuine on screen chemistry, with Sodenbergh's direction often just as smooth as Clooney and his co-stars.

Ocean's Eleven is pure entertainment. Its plot is neither too serious nor meaningful. The film is two hours of well-produced fun. There's nothing wrong with this either, so long as it works, and thankfully Sodenbergh's glamorous gang pull the trick off very well.
