My first computer I used was Mac. After working on a Mac I had to work on a PC with Windows installed. I was shocked how bad Windows worked and how unreliable it was. I have worked for 8 years with Windows after my first experience with Mac. All theses years my soul and mind suffered from longing for a reliable and professional operation system. I couldn't afford buying a Mac. Finally, after my Windows crashed for another time I gave up and installed Mandrake Linux. Since that time I tried Debian and SUSE. You know what? I still have Windows on my PC, but... I am happy I installed Linux. I like Debian, though it is not that much user friendly, but it is sufficient for all my needs, it is stable, reliable and gives me everything I need, starting with office applications and finishing with video editing. Besides, the Internet and network safety are not even questioned.
My opinion while choosing between Windows and Linux is, if you use Windows, don't be too much enticed by what Linux-users say, you may try, but , being used to Windows, you may not like it. If you never tried Windows, Linux is a very good OS to start with and to work. I'd recommend to start with SUSE or Mandrake for you to start with. They are easy to install and to use. Or, you may try Knoppix, if you don't want to install and just want to see what is it all about. Knoppix is a full functional OS loading from your CD or DVD drive without installing.
Fro me there is no question what OS is better. They all are just different and serve their goals. However, with Linux I am not afraid of viruses, I am not discouraged by crashes and 'blue death screens', I am not obliged to buy expensive software that sometimes doesn't work properly. My Linux has been working already for three years with no crash, without being reinstalled, without other problems I encountered while working with Windows (may Bill Gates forgive me.)
