The invasion and destruction of Iraq and Afghanistan (the war prevents reconstruction) and the recent destruction of the Lebanese state, including the infrastructure of this small democracy has resulted in a very strong and strident Iran. Irish troops sent to Lebanon are being used as a buffer to protect Israel. If this NATO led force were truly neutral then they would be present in both Israel and Lebanon. The French are building concrete hehgehogs in preparation for the next onslaught. Irish troops have 23 years peace keeping experience in Lebanon.
Iraq was created from three distinct ethnic peoples when Britain drew a map of Mesopotamia (between the rivers)and created Iraq, in 1920, literally from the sand. At present there is civil war in Iraq. Kurds have the Peshmerga, Sunni the Al Sadr Brigade, Shi'ite the Mehdi army. Sufi, Sumerian, Assyrian and Coptic Christians are seen as supporters of the status quo and as legitimate targets.
The U.S. armed forces, the British Army and other western forces are serving no useful purpose in Iraq. These forces are in the way, as soon as the U.S. army leaves a district in Baghdad these militias patrol the streets and exact revenge, nothing and no one can stop this carnage. The initial U.S. successes are long gone, the retention of the Iraqi army and the Ba'ath Party Government apparatus could have at least retained order in Iraqi society.
The price of oil has spiralled out of control since the invasion of Iraq. The unfounded allegation that the invasion of Iraq was about securing a cheap source of oil has not happened.
The Kurds would welcome the allied forces to Kurdistan. Let the Sunni and Shi'ites fight their civil war.
Treat Iran as an emerging power in the region, there are unreported ongoing talks with U.S. representatives, Iran responds if treated with respect , there are 23 million under 30's in Iran, in time the Mullahs will have very little influence over these people.
Look at the Irish, we travelled the world and still have an influence well beyond our numbers on a small island in the North Atlantic.
