The confederate flag should be banned on all public buildings. It would be ideal to ban them everywhere unfortunately persons who believe in the confederate flag exercise their right to free speech. To me, the confederate flag symbolizes a very dark period of American history, one that should never be forgotten but that very symbol should not be paraded in front of all who see.
There are some who believe the confederate flags "rebel" in a way where they are bad to the bone. To, a pie eyed Yankee it means what it originally stood for in the civil war. Others hold the flag dear to their hearts and they can keep it in their homes, where it should be. The only place where a confederate flag should be displayed is in a museum because you can't erase the past but only learn from it.
There is only one flag that should be displayed proudly and that is the American flag. A symbol that stands for equality of all men, and freedoms that every person is entitled to. Of course, the state flag could be hung beside it or slightly below. This is the United States of America, there is no more deep divide among the north and south.
We are all this world together and we all bleed the same the symbols flown in the sky mean the same to all of us.
I find it appalling that some people feel that the confederate flag should be flown right along side the American flag over public buildings. Is there really a good reason on why this is done? Of all the reasons I have ever heard I really don't think there is one steadfast reason.
In the town I used to live in, my neighbor painted his garage doors with the Confederate flag and hung a big huge confederate flag on the front porch. It bothered me because to me, it means hatred of people that are not white. And people in that area tend to be more racist then other places I lived. Nothing to do but ignore as best you can because of the first amendment guaranteeing the freedom of speech. A freedom everyone enjoys and we can't take it away completely.
In closing, the confederate flag should be banned from public buildings unless of course it is displayed in a museum. As far as displayed at private property, there is nothing to do because we can't infringe on one groups freedom of speech rights while others get to enjoy them.
