been brought to the attention of the public a solution to the problem is the next step. This issue must be addressed on a scientific and political basis to ensure an effective outcome.
The issue of climate change involves the following government departments:
Department of the Environment and Water Resources
Bureau of Meteorology
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for Climate Change, represents Liberal Party's views on climate change and there is the Shadow Minister, Peter Garrett, who is representing the Labor Party's views on the subject. From a scientific point of view, there are several scientists and organisations that contribute information as well as monitor the issue.
The most prominent information was gathered from the Stern Report which established a strong link between the world economy and the effects of climate change. There are also several other reports by inter-governmental bodies which preceded this report.
3. How is the Labor Party addressing the issue?
The Australian Labor party has actively pursued solutions to the problems that climate change will produce. Labor Party Leader, Kevin Rudd, held the National Climate Change Summit on Saturday 31st March 2007. This meeting brought together a collection of Australians from various fields including scientists, academics, political figures and business specialists. The aim of the summit was to identify effective and sustainable solutions to the problem of climate change. The moderated discussion covered the impacts of climate change, emission trading, new technology, renewable energy and Energy efficiency and management. Kevin Rudd clearly set down his reasons for acting on climate change in five points:
The scientific evidence and predictions of danger caused by Global Warming
The effect that climate change will have on the national and international economy
Australia has the responsibility of being pro-active on the issue of climate change and not waiting for other nations to act first
Australia should establish a leadership position in the solution to climate change and use relations with upcoming super nations such as China and India. Australia should use middle power diplomacy' to achieve this and further strengthen alliances with other countries.
The current generation of Australia have an obligation to address this issue now and not leave it to the next generation to solve the problem as this would be unjust.
