walked, or when it is that we began to run. The constant flow of our steps in sync became rhythmic, almost musical. The horizon was still reminiscent of limbo and we seemed to be running nowhere. All I could do was watch the back of her head in anticipation of her next hair flip and my next view of those captivating eyes. It nearly fell on beat with the sound of our steps; about every four or so. I was in a trance; counting by fours until suddenly the music changed. The soft crunch of compacting snow was now overpowered by a bizarre twang that seemed to echo across the barren landscape. We kept running. It was a familiar sound, but I couldn't place it. I was baffled by the strange noise until I felt my foot slip against the smooth surface below the snow. We were on ice; on a lake.
"Whoa, ok, seriously now," I stopped my feet and leaned back clumsily, trying to keep my balance while also trying to stop this girl. "What the hell is going on?"
"Andre, don't you trust me?" Her tone changed dramatically. It went from playfully exuberant to soft and mildly timid; almost vulnerable. This wasn't new to me. "Hold on! Wait for me!" I tried to push off with my right foot and caught nothing. My left leg followed its lead. I flailed my arms in a vein attempt to regain my balance as I slammed down face first on the ice. My cheek bounced off the frozen surface and sent an ominous twang reverberating through the barren landscape. A quick patrol of my tongue around the inside of my mouth assured my teeth were still in tact, so I did my best to regain my balance and get to my feet. When I looked up, I saw her still running ahead, unabated by my collapse. For a second I was just glad she didn't see me biff so spectacularly, but then she began to dissolve in the atmosphere. I used my hands to help me move across the ice until I was able to somewhat gain my footing as I chased after her. "WAIT!"
With one last poorly planned maneuver, I leapt forward with my arms outstretched, apparently thinking I could have somehow cleared the massive
