I went into labor with my son the day I went shopping for my diaper bag. This was not the ideal scenario. I ended up on an obviously crazy search for just the right bag. Don't wait until the last minute like I did! You want to make a good sound investment. The right diaper bag makes a statement to all the other mothers out there. Also, function was also quite high on my list of priorities. I didn't want to spend a fortune either. I wish that I had some sort of a guide that could have save me from racing around the mall looking like a chicken with its head cut off. Here is a handy dandy list of the types of diaper bags to choose from.
1. Designer diaper bag: This is the style that starts making Mom's mouth water. They didn't come up with the name Juicy for no reason. These are the handbags with the hefty price tag and just might break your bank. I walked into Nordstrom's and drooled over a few bags myself. Some choose this type of bag as a status symbol. In my mind, these bags are lacking a few things. They are usually not as durable and they can have a dry clean only fabric. That is just not very practical as a new mom. Also they come in an enormous size that will not fit on the stroller or help when you already have your hands full with a newborn. Is the pretty exterior worth it to buy a Juicy, Coach, or a Kate Spade diaper bag? You will have to make that decision.
2. Diaper bag backpack: There is a great aspect to these types of bags. They are hands free and usually full of pockets and compartments to fit all kinds of things. Think of all those teeny tiny items you have that need a place to go. You need to find those items at a blink of an eye to calm a fussy baby. I have fumbled around so many times looking for keys and pacifiers. It is just not fun. This style of a diaper bag also come in clack or camouflage for the daddy to wear. The diaper dude backpack runs about $60. A backpack style comes with a nicer price tag. They are usually in a durable, washable fabric too.
3. Leather diaper bag: The best advantage I see with these bags would be the convenience in cleaning. A quick swipe of a wet cloth and it's clean. I found the Storksak diaper bag tote to be much like the other designer bags with a high price and short handle. The other nice one was a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag that was priced at a mere $458. Not all of us carry around that kind of money. For those of you who do, I envy you!
4. Personalized diaper bag: You can check out Pottery Barn Kids for a high end version. Here is where you need to get creative. The prices can vary from $30 to $150. You can go for the monogrammed initials or create your own bag with pictures. The ideas can be endless. At http://www.redenvelope.com/ you can find a digital photo diaper bag. The price is around $230.
Whatever you decide on to choose as a diaper bag, remember that this is one gift that is for you. All the other gifts are specifically for the baby to use. Who knows you may get one at your baby shower. You may be carrying around this bag for a long time. Until you get bored and buy a new one or your child no longer needs diapers, whichever comes first!
