the world would become a safer place, that through the dismantling of terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda, violent political terrorism would eventually become an anachronism.
However, this benevolent aim of the new world order has not been yet realized. Almost immediately after the attacks, George W. Bush had declared a War Against Terrorism' and was given the power to take any necessary measures'. Next came the announcement that some civil liberties would need to be relinquished to help combat terrorism. Then came the statement that either you are with us or you are with the terrorists', whilst no concrete evidence had been yet been produced linking Bin Laden or Al Qaeda to the attacks.
In the wake of 9/11, rather than being a made a safer place, the world seems to be becoming a more dangerous place and the politics of fear continues to affect the daily lives of the public. Indeed, the hatred of terrorism mobilizes public support for unilateral military intervention in much the same way that hatred of the west helps recruit members of terrorist organizations. The awful living conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan caused by western military intervention are catalysts for anti-western sentiments.
We are now living in a more volatile world in which a war is being fought, supposedly not against particular nation states, rather against terrorist organizations and a collection of so called rogue states' which continue to be demonized especially by the US. This so called Axis of Evil' of rogue states consists of Libya, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Syria and Cuba; however the focus so far has been on Middle Eastern states. This situation has led to relations between EU member states becoming more strained than ever. Despite an accord between the counter-terrorism policies of Europe and America, transatlantic tensions continue to escalate, with Britain being heavily criticized for becoming too greatly influenced by America. Indeed, the US policy of you are either with us or against us' challenges UN ideals of global peace and unity' and could greatly affect its future relevance in a world which is rapidly splitting into two camps.
Since 9/11 the US government has been redoubling its efforts to establish for itself a position of world dominance. Indeed, these efforts have been so visible in the War on Terror that, what was once only discussed in the offices of the White House is now put it plain view.
