When those fighting the war on terror become terrorists

the world would become a safer place, that through the dismantling of terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda, violent political terrorism would eventually become an anachronism.

However, this benevolent aim of the new world order has not been yet realized. Almost immediately after the attacks, George W. Bush had declared a War Against Terrorism' and was given the power to take any necessary measures'. Next came the announcement that some civil liberties would need to be relinquished to help combat terrorism. Then came the statement that either you are with us or you are with the terrorists', whilst no concrete evidence had been yet been produced linking Bin Laden or Al Qaeda to the attacks.

This situation has led to relations between EU member states becoming more strained than ever. Despite an accord between the counter-terrorism policies of Europe and America, transatlantic tensions continue to escalate, with Britain being heavily criticized for becoming too greatly influenced by America. Indeed, the US policy of you are either with us or against us' challenges UN ideals of global peace and unity' and could greatly affect its future relevance in a world which is rapidly splitting into two camps.

Since 9/11 the US government has been redoubling its efforts to establish for itself a position of world dominance. Indeed, these efforts have been so visible in the War on Terror that, what was once only discussed in the offices of the White House is now put it plain view. The men behind US government foreign policy, including Vice-President Dick
