As the current political climate has strengthened the globalization of economics and the military, there have been repeated calls for a world government. It is suggested that this new order will make war a thing of the past. However, this is the role that the UN was supposed to fulfil in the wake of WW2, yet war continues to rage on every continent of the globe.

Since 9/11, the United Nations has been going through a steady process of reinventing itself into an apparatus of global governance, gaining the legal measures and financial resources to implement its policies on a global scale. This reinvention of the UN can be seen as an effort to avoid repeating the failings of Sovereign governments, and its continuing expansion is justified through attempting to provide solutions to global problems. The proposed apparatus of a strengthened system of world government include a system of global taxation, a standing international army, an international criminal court and an expansion of the powers of the Security Council.

The commissions of the UN have been actively promoting the globalization of politics for decades. The proposed system of global taxation would allow the UN to be funded more effectively than the current system. Also, the proposed UN standing army made possible by global taxation, will establish the U.N. as a military power in its own right, ending its reliance on peacekeeping forces drawn from member states.

In the third world however, fair global taxation would be almost impossible to implement and there would be the ever present risk that distributed tax funds may be siphoned off by a corrupt elite. Even if the system of taxation could be made workable and wealth was distributed to the developing nations as aid, globalization has taught us that throwing money at the problem does not work. It is also likely that population control would be a necessary condition for aid.

The International Criminal Court claims jurisdiction over all countries of the world, even those which have not voted in favour of the institution. Eventually, this Court will pass verdicts that are binding to all UN member states. If the authority of the UN Secretary General is boosted, they will become something of a global president. The proposed elimination of Security Council power of veto would make the system fairer on paper; however, this would eliminate the possibility of repealing extremely controversial legislation if there was a majority vote in favour of it. As it stands
