Tips for the eco-friendly traveler

Modern society is actively encouraged to consider the impact of their own actions on the environment and we all like to think that we are contributing in the preservation of natural resources.

Every form of travel creates a "carbon footprint" (a measure of the impact that resulting human activities have on the environment).One concept that emphasizes sustainability is ecotourism. A method of traveling, that combines a vacation with the conservation of the natural world.

It is now a viable practice when travelling to minimize your own "carbon footprint", by either carrying out your own Eco-friendly travel ideals, or by visiting a location that specializes in environmental conservation.

Suggestions to consider when traveling are:

* The minimum use of internal flights when possible because aircraft have a high carbon output. When feasible consider using public transport for commuting as an alternative to your own vehicle or a taxi. Hiring a bicycle or walking helps the environment and you health.

* The use of a travel provider that specializes in eco-tourism. They can advise you on what methods are viable and the most proficient.

* Take the time to educate yourself on the area you are visiting. A little knowledge of the local customs and beliefs can help you and the local people and enrich your holiday.

* Source local foods and merchandise. This provides an income to the local economy.

* Observe the local laws and be responsible towards behavior.

* Respect the use of limited resources. The location may have a water or food shortage.

* Minimize your wastage and packaging.

* Use a local tour guide to sample the often hidden delights that a location has to offer. It can provide an insight into a local culture that is often shielded from the mainstream tourism.

By following these few simple rules you can increase the value of your vacation and decrease the affects of your visit on the environment.

For the individuals who prefer to ensure the optimum eco-friendly travel you can search the Internet for specialized tour and travel holiday providers from around the world.

The largest organization for eco-tourism can be found at www.ecotourism.org for a detailed and informative guide on sustainable travel.

Popular websites that provide ecological resources for responsible travelers are:

* www.ethicalescape.com

* www.responsibletravel.com

* www.ecotourdirectory.com

Choosi ng eco-friendly accommodation:

* A careful search of tourism providers, via the internet, can locate accommodation that limits its environmental impact. If you are unsure always ask the provider. Most will be happy to answer any questions, such as how they contribute to the local economy or their common practices for aiding the environment.

Eco friendly accommodation has developed phenomenally in the past decade and the movement towards respecting the surrounding nature is a continuing factor. Ecological accommodation is widely available within a range of budgets.

A prime example of a vacation destination that restricts its environmental impact is with the South American country of Costa Rica. A country rich in diversity, that has adapted to the fastest growing sector of tourism and developed the complete holiday package of an experience within vast rainforest's, in an ecological restricting manner.

The Lapa Rios Eco Lodge is geared towards preserving the nature reserve through awareness and conservation. Sustainable tourism that both benefits the community and leaves a minimal impact to the environment. The complete combination of harmony, tourism and nature, as visitors can become involved within the local community and see for themselves what they have contributed to.

An ideal example of a resort that does not compromise on an exciting and rewarding vacation with the preservation of the surrounding nature for future generations.
