I really, REALLY wanted Lex Luther to be a good guy. It's breaking my heart watching his downward spiral to self and world destruction. I know... What the hell did I think was going to happen? HE'S THE BAD GUY. But still... He didn't have to be.
Oh and, while I love John Schneider - never was I so happy, as the day they killed off Jonathan Kent. Rest in Peace you self righteous, annoying pain in the butt. Scratch that. I was a bit happier when Pete hit the road. What an annoying character that was!
Smallville is a brilliant addition to the world of Superman legends. Okay, so they take a few creative leaps every now and then. For example, at first it was bizarre to have Lois Lane and Lana Lang existing in Superman's life in the same time frame - but I've gotten over it.
I used to b-line for my computer whenever my husband, then boyfriend, would turn on Smallville. Somewhere along the line, I got bored and sat down to watch an episode, and I was totally hooked. We own the box set for every season except for the present. I program Smallville faithfully into my digital video recorder every week - Smallville without commercials - think Canada's version of TIVO.
The series boasts a brilliant cast of actors. Many taken from other awesome shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark Angel, not to mention Dukes of Hazard. The plot lines are intense, but peppered with enough comedy to make even the most bizarre plot-line palatable.
The storyline I'm most interested in is Lex Luther. Michael Rosenbaum is brilliant in capturing all the intricacies of the character. Lex Luther is the classic tragic anti-hero. The character and storyline development for Lex's slide down the slippery slope to evil was brilliant. Personally, I blame Jonathan Kent. From day one, he placed the blame for the sins of the father on Lex's head. No matter what Lex would do to try to help and please the Kent's - he was confronted by Jonathan's "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree mentality".
The poor guy never stood a chance.
* INSANELY evil father. (Okay, so now he's a good-guy - but what kind of horrible irony is that as well? Turning his son into a monster, and now sitting back and judging him. Great mess you made Lionel.) This bastard let his son think he killed his own brother. Nice. Not to mention the heartless internment in the mental health facility, only to gain control of Luthercorp. What kind of father DOES that?
*SUPERMAN did nothing
