Feng shui tips for the bedroom

Given that we spend, on average, a third of our lives asleep the bedroom should be one of the most important rooms in the house. But because few people see it, it can become neglected - or worse, turn into a mere extension of the living space, to be used for reading, working, watching television . . . If your bedroom isn't quite a picture of serenity, or just in need of a makeover, feng shui can help you create the perfect place to rest.

The main piece of furniture in a bedroom - and hence a major focus of feng shui - is, of course, the bed. The ideal place for it is in the "command position": As far from the door as possible, while allowing the door to be visible from the bed. The head of the bed should be against a wall to provide a sense of solidity and support; and the foot should not point directly out of the door; this is how corpses are carried out, and imitating a corpse is definitely not good chi! Avoid putting it between the door and a window, as this is the path the chi follows across the room and the constant flow of energy keeps you awake; or under a window, which can disperse your good chi and put you directly in the path of any bad chi coming in. Make sure the chi can flow around the bed properly by having space on either side. Don't have exposed beams above the bed as these induce stress and pressure. Finally, try not to have sharp corners of other items of furniture pointing towards your sleeping position; these form "poison arrows" of negative energy.

Sound complicated, doesn't it?

Since houses aren't perfect, and likely aren't designed with feng shui in mind, you will almost certainly have trouble meeting all these requirements, particularly in smaller rooms. The solution is to do the best you can in the space available, and fix anything you can't avoid using feng shui cures.

If you can't put the bed in the command position, hang a small mirror so you can see the door. If your feet are pointing out the door, use a bed with a high, solid footboard, or place another piece of furniture at the end of the bed. Calm cross-room energy flow by placing a rug between the bed and the door. Cover a window above the bed with a curtain in solid fabric to block the chi. Consider filling in a beamed ceiling, if it's high enough; or soften the beams with fabric. Soften sharp corners with draped fabric (or choose new, rounder furniture).

The bed is a good place to start, but there is much more that can be done with feng shui to make your bedroom a haven of peace
