How to incorporate exercise on your next vacation

Like many people around the world, I have embraced fitness as a way of life. I have traveled quite a lot over the last three decades or so, and seldom will I go anywhere in those travels where I do not maintain my fitness regimen in one way or another. To me, it's vital as we get older to maintain a high level of fitness in order to maintain a well-balanced quality of life into our senior years.

Often I will find myself in a hotel in a strange city, but these days, it's very seldom that even a 3-star hotel does not have a fitness room. Some hotel fitness facilities may be small and lack certain equipment, but if they have an exercise bike and a few assorted free-weights or weight-stations, that's more than enough to keep oneself in fine shape. Also, one of the first things I ask when I register at a hotel is where the local running routes are. You can almost be certain that most cities have favorite pathways that local runners use. Running outside is free, healthy, and versatile. All you need to pack is your running shoes and clothes and you're all set to go. You might find yourself running through Central Park on a Manhattan vacation or perhaps along the Embarcadero if you are visiting San Fransisco. It's a great way to sight-see and stay fit at the same time.

If you decide on a cruise holiday, you most likely have made one of the best vacation choices available for anyone wishing to incorporate fitness into their daily holiday routine. All twelve cruise ships I have sailed on have had running tracks circling one of the outside decks and fitness rooms that rival some of the best you might find on land. They include free towels, whirlpools, hot-tubs, treadmills, exercise bikes, and a wide variety of work-out stations. For seniors who are not quite as spry and want some lower-key exercise, each morning normally sees a staff member leading early risers to stretching exercises out on deck and a few easy walking laps around the track.

For the single female traveler who prefers to exercise in her room, consider bringing along your favorite workout disk from home and playing it on your lap-top. With today's technology there is no reason you can't do aerobic exercises or yoga in private no matter where you are traveling. I also make a point of packing a bike inner-tube when I travel. It roles up into a super-small size and takes very little room in your luggage. There are a wide variety of exercises you can do with an inner-tube because of it's strength and ability to
