Being an effective teacher means being able to adapt to every situation. No two days in a teacher's career are the same and every good teacher has to be able to handle every situation that comes their way. Just the same no two students are the same nor will they always act the same every day. An effective teacher is able to teach, control, and speak to their students no matter what situation comes up.
When a typically good student shows out in class the teacher should be able to handle the situation without overreacting, as well as without taking away from the classroom. The teacher should be able to tell when students are having a bad day and be able to control the situation.
An effective teacher will speak to their students as if they were people and not babies. Students respond better when they are spoken too as if they were adults or equal with their teachers. They work harder to make better grades because they feel respected.
Creating a fun environment for students to learn in is a sign of a great teacher. Students learn more effectively when they are rewarded for good grades and good behavior, as well as when learning is made enjoyable. An effective teacher will make learning so enjoyable that students will want to learn more.
An effective teacher cares about not only their students, but all students. They are more than just teachers, they are also guidance counselors. They listen when students need to talk and give advice when it's needed. They are always available to all students, especially their own.
Teachers must realize that they are teachers every day, all day. Whether it's Saturday or Monday, they are available when ever their students need them. They come in early, stay late, and make themselves available during non-school days. They keep the parents up to date on the progress of their children. And make sure to set up conferences when the student's grades fall or when they refuse to do their work.
All teachers know that to be effective and make a difference in the life of a student, they have to go above and beyond just being a teacher. To be an effective teacher, a teacher must be more. They must be a teacher, a friend, a counselor, a mentor, and a student. Because an effective teacher is more than just a teacher.
