The government should absolutely pay for medical care. If it did, the after-effects would be surprising:
1) Less fraud. Medical fraud is one of the biggest forms of fraud in the US today. Not only do millions of innocent citizens realize their credit cards have been used against them, they also find (in greater numbers!) that their social security numbers have been used to obtain medical care. This not only creates a financial nightmare, but a medical nightmare as well. What if you are not diabetic, but someone who stole your medical insurance information is? You could be dosed with potentially harmful medicines you don't need.
2) Equal treatment for all. Currently, the poor are generally taken care of, for better or worse, by state funded programs like AHCCCS. And the very rich can fund their own care. But what about the folks in between who can't afford to take care of their own health? The states say they make too much money. Their own pocketbooks say they make too little. And what about the way HMOs play God? They decide whether we live or die based on what they decide they want to pay for. Of course, it doesn't have to be that drastic. Sometimes it is just quality of life that suffers. Perhaps they refuse to cover an experimental treatment that is getting fantastic results. Or perhaps they decide your issue is cosmetic, even though it is ruining you psychologically.
3) Medicines that work and have far fewer frightening side effects. Ever wonder what is happening out there in the land of prescription drug research? Do the commercials for all the new drugs scare the daylights out of you? Do you laugh with your friends at these commercials, making up lists of potential side effects that reads something like "In rare circumstances, users could experience projectile vomiting, see purple leopards behind the sofa, quack like a duck at precisely six thirty-three each second Tuesday, and grown hair on the palms of their hands and soles of their feet." They continually pull medicines that are working just fine for millions of people off of the shelves and replace them with something newer that is supposed to be better. But are they really better if those scary side effect lists are getting longer and longer? The fact is, there is nothing we need to make us well that isn't already in existence in nature. If you don't believe that, then the medical industry has really pulled the wool over your eyes and done a bang up job with PR.
We need universal healthcare. Every citizen should have an equal opportunity to receive quality medical care. These are lives we are talking about, not dollar bills!
