Some people may think that Valentine's Day should be eliminated for several good reasons. One, there are more people getting divorced these days than there are individuals who are getting married. Two, there seems to be a trend of "one night stands" that are going on around in these times, so where is the love or romance in any of that; I mean, really. Then there are so many single parent households that it's ridiculous; I always thought that children were supposed to be made from a real LOVING relationships, but I guess that is nothing but a fable now too. But, to just be fair a little bit here, I'm not saying that true love doesn't exist at all on Valentines Day, or any other day of the year for that matter; it's just that I think (and this is just a mild opinion) that the holiday is simply overemphasized, that's all.
Besides getting someone a box of chocolates, a bouquet of roses, or an over-sized stuffed Teddy Bear, what does the St. Valentine's Holiday really represent? I could make a joke out of this myself and say that some people's sex lives are so slow that maybe they only "get it" once a year and that one time would be on Valentine's Day, but I wouldn't even try to depress anyone by going there because for some of us it just might be so true. The very idea of Valentine's Day is not just for lovers in intimate relationships, but also to show love towards, let's say, perhaps a best friend or a family member; love between a parent and a child; love between siblings or perhaps a whole close knit community of people. Valentine's Day can mean those things too.
But Valentine's day isn't about just showing love to someone special just one day out of the entire year. You should be able to show someone how much you love that person ALL YEAR ROUND (whether it's a spouse, undercover lover, family, or even your pet.) To some degree, the way I see it, Valentine's Day has been turned into quite a shallow, commercialized holiday. In certain chain stores, like Duane Reade and Rite Aide, they even had special made condoms for the holiday. They have logos on the condoms like "Come Get Some" or they have condoms which have alphabetical designs on them that represents the NYC subway system and all that crap. I mean, it's really hilarious how commercialized Valentine's Day has become at this point (just like Christmas, just like 4th of July, just like Halloween, just like Memorial Day, just like Labor Day, just like Thanksgiving, and there's the President's Day
