If you're not supposed to drink & drive, then why do bars have parking lots?

The fact that a particular bar or drinking establishment has a parking lot doesn't always automatically mean that you have to drink and drive and get yourself in trouble. Neither is it a viable excuse if you get caught doing so. Not everyone drinks at bars and those people are often called upon for rides home by people that do, meaning that parking spaces are a necessity.

Often bars are situated either away from everything else, meaning that unless you live very near by then you have to drive there. Or they are in a downtown area, which again means that it is usually too far to walk to for most people. As well as all that walking around much after you have become intoxicated is not only annoying for residents to have drunk people near their home, perhaps being belligerent or loud. But it can also be dangerous as well. Most towns and cities have some sort of criminal element, and being alone and drunk is the prefect target for a lot of these people to take advantage of.

Bars being businesses they are always trying to get as many people in them as they can. Not having a car parking facility would undoubtedly massively reduce the number of customers that they could get. The fact is that a lot of people do drink and drive, and that a lot of bars are too far away for most of their customers to do anything else. The bar isn't responsible for what its customers do after they leave, and if they want to drive home drunk then the bar isn't liable. So bars having car parks is just them getting the most of the customer base available to them. Its your own choice at the end of the day if you want to drink and drive or not, and no one else's fault if you do.

Having a well lit car park means that taxis have somewhere to meet people that they are picking up and that they are soon safely home after a nights drinking. Similarly being able to call a friend or family member for a ride home after going to the bar means that they can park more easily. After all having to try to hunt for a parking space down town late at night might otherwise be a very difficult thing to do see as a lot or car parks are closed at night.

As well as this many bars double up as restaurants, particularly in the day time. This means that many families might be going there during the day. And that people like this who wouldn't usually be drinking would also need to use the car parking. Believe it or not there are even people who can go to a bar and then just have one drink before they leave. And there are people who might stop at a bar on the side of a road after a days driving and stay the night. Either in the bar if it has the facilities of in their car or truck.

So bars have car parks for a multitude of reasons really, which all make sense when you think about them. The important thing to remember is that by having a car park the bar isn't trying to get you personally to drink and drive. The best thing is to always leave the car at home when you're intending to drink at all, unless you're the designated driver that is.
