Behind the name: Landon

The name LANDON, a good name; inspires masculinity, strength, wholesomeness, and refinement. That would about describe one of my favorite actors, Michael Landon, star of "Little House on the Prairie". With a thick head of hair that would rival the legendary Samson, broad shoulders and a chiseled face, anyone with the name of Landon should turn heads.

Masculine, although the trend these days is to take any masculine name and make it feminine.

ETYMOLOGY:
Although the name Landon is derived from the surname meaning "long hill or ridge", and in English, can mean "grassy plain" it comes from very ancient times. before the period of the Norman Conquest, around 1066 A.D. Historically, families with the name Landon came to settle in North America in the British Colonies where the earliest Landons settled in such states as Maryland, Boston, and Virginia as early as the 1700's.

POPULARITY:
In the 1930's the name of Landon as a first name made a little squeak.
In the 1960's the name made another tiny squeak.
It was not until the 1970's that Landon started its climb to popularlity where in the 1980's it skyrocketed to an impressive 49th place among the roster of 1000 names.
