The history of gambling

Gambling has been present in our society since the dawning of time, a term which essentially refers to the wagering of money or personal belongings on something of which the outcome can not be known.

Gambling has been an integral part of society for thousands of years, a part of human culture that dates back in ancient China to as early as 2300 B.C. In Egypt a pair of ivory dice have been found that date back to some time before 1500 B.C and writings have even been found in a pyramid at Giza that speak of gambling. Elsewhere it is known that those of Ancient Rome, Greece and India also all practiced gambling in some form.

King Henry the Eighth of England is said to have banned gambling when he found his soldiers were spending more time on gambling than they were on doing their jobs. Gambling was hugely popular in the Middle Ages, it was not just England that had problems with its gambling and many others countries did also. Dice were the most common form of gambling in the Middle Ages, a form of gambling that has grown and developed over the years. Craps is one such example of a dice game, and Hazard another. Hazard dates back to the 14th century and is a game that was once played for high stakes in English gambling rooms.

US federal law governs that gambling is legal in the United States of America, however individual states have the option to regulate or prohibit its practice. Gambling has been legal in the state of Nevada since 1931, elsewhere it has been legal in Atlantic City, New Jersey since 1976, and Tunica, Mississippi since 1990. Both of these cities now have extensive casino sites and largely developed casino resort areas. Las Vegas is almost certainly the best known gambling destination in the world and is a place to which many of the worlds most hardened gamblers travel to in order to experience the cities gambling life.

There are many ways in which gambling can be undertaken such as through table games, casino games, or even through electronic gaming. Games of chance such as craps and roulette are common of casinos as are slot machines, and also games that require an element of skill including blackjack and poker. These are but a few of the ways in which to gamble, and other common gambling means in the modern world include bingo and lotteries also.

In the US there is the MegaMillions which has been running now since 1996. It is the biggest jackpot game in the country and the record jackpot amount to date has been $390
