How to write a love letter

by Jennifer Claerr

Created on: February 13, 2008

A love letter is a beautiful and elegant way to expess undying affection to the one you love. Men and women throughout history have availed themselves of a quill and a piece of parchment to express the innermost desires of their hearts. In this day and age of electronic documents and email, getting back to our roots can be deeply satisfying and enjoyable.

When writing a love letter, it's best not to stick to a cliche of what one believes is romantic. Don't try to emulate archaic styles of writing. Instead, express how you really feel. You may want to be a little reserved if you hardly know the other person; however, if you know your sweetheart very well, let your instincts be your guide. If you run into trouble, just Google the terms "love letters," "sample love letters" or "free love letters" to find a variety of sites online which offer help with romantic love letters.

The best place of all to find inspiration is in the romantic love letters of history. The love letters which Napoleon wrote to Josephine and that Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote to her husband Robert Browning are among the most romantic in history. People in past centuries were not afraid to pour out their hearts completely in an offering of love. These romantic notes from the past can serve as a source of inspiration for all of us.

Try using parchment paper or a similar stationery made of heavy stock, and write it by hand with a quill, a fountain pen or a calligraphic pen to express your innermost feelings. Consider investing in a calligraphy kit. Be sure to write carefully and slowly, taking time to ensure that the forms of your letters are clear, attractive and legible. Open the letter with a greeting such as "My Dearest" or "My Darling." End it with "With unconditional love," "Your beloved," or "Yours always," followed by your name. Then seal it with wax and press a beloved object such as a ring or coin into it. Finish the letter off by wrapping a silken ribbon around it.

Romantic Love Letters from a Man to a Woman

In modern times we tend to underemphasize our feelings of love and affection. Truly great romantic love letters express love in the biggest and most profound terms. Don't be afraid to exaggerate, but be sincere. If it's been three days since you saw her, tell her it feels as though it's been three years. Reminisce about the day the two of you met, and the feelings and thoughts you had that day. Remind her why she is special. What is it about her that stands out and makes her better
