Computers are becoming the central information centers in our homes and offices. While typing a report for class or work we can listen to our favorite music, take a break to watch a hilarious video on YouTube, check our email, get instant news and weather alerts, instant message our friends, and so on. There is only one thing missing: when our favorite show comes on the television we have to move from the computer to the couch (at least until the commercial break). Or, what if you are on a trip and still want to tune into your favorite shows at night? Why not take that logical next step and watch tv on our PC? Here are a few ways to accomplish this.
TV Tuner Card
One way to accomplish this task is to purchase and install a tv tuner card in your computer. These are fairly easy to install; while some older models will have you open your computer and install it on a PCI slot, there are many models that will hook up to your computer via USB or other external input. Once the hardware is installed, you simply have to install the software that came with it. Often, this software will also work similar to TiVo, allowing you to record television shows to play back later. Before you do any of this, however, make sure that the tv tuner card will be compatible with your television service.
Streaming Satellite Software
There are several websites that offer software that allows you to watch satellite television on your computer. These services claim to allow you to view over 3,000 channels for free after purchasing the software for around $50. One such website is satellitetvtopc.com, which claims that its service is 100% legal. The programs can be viewed using Windows Media Player or Real Player. I would suggest researching these services further to check the legality and prices.
Watching TV with you Web Browser
Some channels like HBO allow you to watch live tv on your computer without installing any software. You simply have to be a subscriber, or pay an extra fee. You can also watch past recordings of television shows by going to the station's website. For instance, you can watch full-length episodes of "The Office" by going to NBC's website.
