Sewing your own clothes can be a fun, rewarding experience. Sewing allows you to be a designer because you are not restricted to the styles that are available in the department stores. As a seamstress who sews her own clothes, you can choose the type of sleeve, collar, and the length of a skirt or dress. You can embellish these garments any way you wish, and when finished, you will have a truly unique garment, or a unique wardrobe, in a color scheme that you have chosen. Sewing takes more time than buying ready to wear, but I think it is worth the time to have a garment that is well made.
Not only can you create a custom wardrobe when sewing your own clothes, but you can also create garments that fit well. This requires some understanding of altering commercial sewing patterns before sewing construction, and fortunately, there are many books on this topic. One of my favorite books is "Fast Fit" by Sandra Betzina. In this book, she addresses the fitting issues that many women face, and she also provides the solutions as well. The instructions are clear and there are great illustrations, too.
Another benefit of sewing your own clothes is that you can choose the type of closures you would like to have. If the garment has buttons, you can choose plain buttons, or very elaborate ones, depending on the style of the garment and your particular taste.
Although sewing your own clothing may not be quite as economical as it once was, if you sew garments that can be mixed and matched, you might be able to save some money by sewing your own clothing. For example, a pair of black pants or a black skirt could be mixed with blouses or tops of several colors to create more than one outfit. If you find a blouse pattern that you particularly like, make it in different fabrics or fabric prints and you will also be able to wear it with the black pants or black skirt. In this way, sewing your own clothing might save some money, and you will be having fun in the process.
Sewing also allows you to create the accessories to go with your garments. Sewing scarves, handbags, or hats that match or coordinate with your home sewn wardrobe could create a truly custom wardrobe from head to toe.
