The birthstone list differs among various traditions. For example, the Tibetan list of birthstones, also known as the mystical, is not the same as the Ayurvedic. Birthstones have changed throughout the ages, so let's take a look at those which are currently popular according to the official list from the American National Association of Jewelers.
January
The birthstone for January is the Garnet, the stone of energy and passion. This is a mineral found during the Bronze Age. It is mostly deep red but can come in other colours. Garnet jewellery was extremely popular in Europe during Victorian times. Healing powers of Garnet are thought to include guidance and protection and healers use this stone to deliver warmth to the body, this assists in alleviating aches and pains within the muscles and joints.
February
The Amethyst is the birthstone associated with February. Amethyst is the stone of sincerity and security. Colours range from a deep purple to the lightest violet. However, Amethyst in its purest form is colourless. The Amethyst was popular during Ancient Egyptian times and continues to be used in ornaments and jewellery today. Gemstone healers use Amethyst to calm and protect and to treat addictions. It is thought to be an aid in the relief of anxiety and depression, disorders of the digestive system, neuralgia and problems associated with hearing.
March
The month of March is represented by Aquamarine, the stone of beauty and loyalty. Colours include a range of light blue and were found during the middle ages. Aquamarine belongs to the Beryl family of gemstones and so is a cousin of the Emerald. Aquamarine is one of the most popular stones used to adorn modern day jewellery. Healers use Aquamarine to restore peace and tranquillity, and as an aid in the improvement of eye sight.
April
The Diamond belongs to the month of April, the stone of love. It is most often colourless but can be found in almost any other colour. The Diamond is the most precious stone in the world and was first found in India approximately six thousand years ago. The Diamond has long been given to symbolise everlasting love. Healers use this valuable jewel to assist the body in the elimination of toxins and to balance the metabolism.

The birthstone associated with May is the Emerald, the stone of faithfulness and friendship. The colour is deep green, a rare and valuable stone, the Emerald is the most precious of the Beryl family and was first found in ancient Egypt. Healers
