Gentle facial cleansing how-to

Do you know that the most important step in our skin care is facial cleansing? Why? Because we do it at least once everyday and it is the fundamental step to prepare a clean foundation for the skin care products to be absorbed later on. As it is an everyday routine, it is important to do it gently, otherwise, it would be too harsh on our skin in the long-run and does more harm than good.

Here are some tips on how to clean your face gently:

1. Pick a facial cleansing product that is gentle on skin, like Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser or Kiehl's Gentle Cleansing Foam; or you could pick one from some organic or natural brands. These gentle facial cleansers usually have less foam and that means they contain less irritating chemicals which is a good factor for healthy skin in the long run.

2. Make sure you lather the foam on your hands first (if it's not cleansing milk) before applying it on your face. Rubbing the cleansing product directly on wet face without lathering is too harsh on skin and it would not be evenly spread on skin while washing.

3. Wash your face at maximum twice a day depending on your skin types. People with oily skin should wash your face with your cleansing product once in the morning and once at night, but definitely no more than that. Washing your face too many times would result in drying your skin out and thus more oil is secreted as a protection for skin. People with dry or sensitive skin should wash your face with water in the morning and with your cleansing product once at night to avoid skin being further dried out or irritated.

4. Do you rub your face too hard. Make sure you massage gently on face while washing or drying with a towel. Rubbing your skin too hard or in the wrong direction would only give rise to "fine lines" on your face, it doesn't mean cleaning your face thoroughly.

5. Use cool water to wash your skin at all times. Water being too hot or too cold is not good for skin.

Facial cleansing only takes up around 2 minutes of your everyday schedule, but this 2 minutes is the most important time in the whole skin care routine. When you do it right, do it gently, it would contribute to your healthy skin in the long-run and save you headaches in future.
