a sudden detour. Instead of looking at the situation as an inconvenient interruption, view it as a chance to reflect. While temporarily leaving your ongoing hamster wheel of commitments, take time to examine where you would like to go after the ordeal is over.
Friendships
Friends are great when they are great. They are an emotional dead weight when they are not. It is difficult to jump off the train when you have been closely entwined with someone for years. If you know all of their kids' favorite foods, and their mother's favorite flowers. If your husband golf's with her husband, or your wife plays cards with his wife, dis-entangling can seem like the greater of two evils. If you feel that your friendship has created more obligations and burdens in your life than joy, step back and assess. For your own personal happiness, and that of your friend's, back away and take a break. The feeling of relief could be mutual.
If your friend, whom you love, suddenly moves, marries, has children or undergoes a life change that carries her off in a different direction, you will grieve for the loss. To move on, make new friends. Take classes and volunteer. The space left by your departing friend will make room in your life for a new one.
A Common Theme
The common theme to each scenario is the point of view of the person experiencing the sudden curve, bump or fork in the road. When faced with a challenge, you can determine your direction. How you choose-viewing the glass as half full or half empty, or viewing the change as opportunity rather than catastrophe, will make all the difference.
