throat will be soothed and the wearer will experience mental clarity. The sapphire has become a common companion to a diamond on engagement rings and wedding bands, giving rings a nostalgic look and instilling the promise of God in personal relationships.

October - Opal: The opal is one of the most unusual and delicate of all the gemstones. Millions of years ago, a combination of silica and water flowed into cracks in the earth and hardened, creating the brilliant pink and blue shades of opal that we know today. Opals chip and crack easily and are very sensitive to heat and even natural body oils. Opals should be worn no less than a half an hour after the application of make-up, hair spray or perfume. The mysterious stone is seen as a symbol of courage, the sea, and communication. The opal can be a stone of love, but can bring bad luck to wearers who were not born in the month of October.

November - Yellow Topaz or Citrine: Yellow topaz is the traditional birthstone of November, but has been replaced by citrine in recent years because of the rarity and expense of true topaz. Citrine ranges from pale yellow to a deep gold in color and comes from such places as Bolivia and Russia. It has been called the "Stone of the Mind" for its powers in creating mental clarity and opening the mind to psychic revelations. It is also known as the "Merchant's Stone," thought to be lucky in increasing sales in a flailing business. The stone is thought to increase the self-esteem of its wearer and aids in digestion.

December - Blue Topaz or Turquoise - When heated, topaz can show a variety of colors, including the blue topaz that is commonly used for the birthstone jewelry of December. Also used is turquoise, a green-blue stone that has been used for thousands of years in jewelry from many cultures, including the Egyptians, Chinese and Native Americans. In ancient days, turquoise was seen as a symbol of wealth and protection, friendship and peace. The stone is thought to have anti-inflammatory and detoxifying powers for the wearer, and can be worn with the metal copper to increase turquoise's power. Today, most turquoise comes from Mexico.
