Landon (LAN-don) comes from the Old English meaning "wooded" or "long" hill. Written Laundun or Langdun, it was originally a surname. It came into existence in Cornwall possibly before the Norman Conquests in 1066 A.D. Because of its origins, it seems to be a Christian name.

Its popularity has greatly increased in the past centuries. It came to the United States around 1880 as the 837th most popular name. It slowly increased until 1974 when Little House on the Prairie debuted starring Michael Landon. It then surged up over 200 ranks in the next couple of years.
