Volunteering

The benefits of volunteering are immeasurable to not only your own personal self but also those people whose lives are touched by the efforts of your volunteering. There is no greater good then the giving on ones time in an unselfishness way and it makes you feel good to help.

Volunteering has many benefits for improving your self, for when you give of yourself freely you also reap what you sow, but in a good way. Volunteering will make you feel great knowing you have made a difference in someone's life, and that will boost your self-esteem. Volunteering will also help keep you busy so your mind is not stressing out about things you cannot change, you are making a difference, and that benefits everyone.

As the volunteer chairperson with our local habitat for humanity, I was often selecting and directing countless volunteers to do many tasks from fundraising to actually building the homes. I was often thanked for pairing up individuals who I thought would work well together, and there was another effect I had not thought of.

When I would put non-professionals who had a strong interest in the activity with a professional in that interest, the non-professional got to work along side the pro and learned more then they bargained for. That is the beauty of volunteering is learning something new and different.

Volunteering inspires us to give of ourselves and when we do this, everyone benefits in some way. If you volunteer at a head start or preschool to read to the children, you are giving your time and the children are getting the chance to hear a story and met someone new.

If you choose to volunteer at a nursing home, singing, reading, or sitting playing cards with those people who live there you will no doubt be brightening their day. Days in a nursing home when all you usually see are staff members can be long and boring, but a new face to tell stories with or laugh with is always a Godsend.

If you choose to volunteer in a hospital where someone lies dying you can help ease their minds and take their cares away for an hour or so, and this will help them feel better, you too will notice that you feel better knowing your problems seem pale in comparison.

Volunteering in soup kitchen or at your local food pantry will show you that you troubles although they may seem a big deal to you, is better than not having a job. You may complain about your pay not being enough to feed your family, but at least you have a job.

Volunteering will also make you feel wanted, needed, and appreciated so get out there today and become active in your community. What ever you like to do, there is a volunteer opportunity there for you, and you simply need to look for it.
