Travel tips: Transform your hotel room into a home

As someone who is accustomed to spending a large portion of time on the road, I know how uncomfortable a hotel room can be. While at first it might seem exciting to be in a new place, things can quickly get a little boring. No matter what hotel it is, the room seems to be the same with small bathrooms, older prints on the wall, and the same boring bed sheets. If you tend to pick the same hotel over and over again, you'll probably notice that the chain uses the same accessories used in their rooms all across the country. While it can be boring and uncomfortable, there are ways to make your hotel room feel homier.

The first thing you should do is to bring along a few things from home, especially if you plan on staying in your hotel for longer than a week. You should bring along family pictures, and even DVD's or CD's if you have a computer capable of playing those discs. Even knowing that you can see your spouse or significant other directly before falling asleep can make you feel more comfortable.

As soon as you reach your destination, you should take the time to unpack your belongings and put everything away. We all tend to live out of our suitcase when staying in a hotel room because it is a temporary fix. Living as if things are temporary though can make you feel more uncomfortable, and also disorganized. You will spend most of your trip digging through suitcases, trying to find the right shirt or pair of pants. Remember that hotels put closets, hangers, and dressers in every room for a reason.

Another great tip is to bring along your own pillows, and a blanket if you are used to sleeping with the same one every night. There's nothing more uncomfortable than trying to make those too soft, or overly lumpy pillows in your hotel room feel right. If you bring along a few creature comforts from home, it can make your stay a little easier.

Lastly, if you plan on being away from home for a significant amount of time, consider investing in a webcam. Webcams are the hottest thing right now, and they can help you stay connected with friends and loved ones back home. Even if the hotel requests a small fee for using the internet, it can help you feel more relaxed. Everyone back home is just a mouse click away when you have a webcam.

Remember that only you can really make your hotel room feel more like home!
