In the last couple weeks I have thought about the possible need for violence in this world. I read Anne Coulter's How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must because I believe it is important to familiarize oneself with an opponent's ideas. A natural liberal and compassionate intellectual, I stand against the current war in Iraq and occupation in Afghanistan. I have been against it since the beginning. While a freshman and sophomore in college, I helped organize antiwar marches after 9/11. What if liberals actually are too soft? What if male paternalism will help keep Americans alive? Many of my friends' jaws would drop upon witnessing me write this. Those who know me most well would not be surprised because they know I am a person who questions my assumptions constantly. I think that is a big difference between myself and the Religious Right. I admit when I'm wrong.
Democrats are choosing between Obama and Clinton now. Surprisingly, Obama has seemed to exceed Clinton in liberalism. Democrats are unhappy with Clinton's support of the war in Iraq. Although Clinton supports women's reproductive freedom and many other second wave feminist issues, she does not regret American invasion on Iraq.
Clinton desires violence like all the rest. Coulter openly discusses her disdain for all things liberal. She does not believe that liberals have articulate explanations or rational arguments. Many of course say the same about George W. Bush. For many, Obama has been a fresh sign of promise to many Americans losing hope. Obama does not advocate for violence, like Clinton and Coulter.
The American political system advocates for competition. Right now each candidate seeks merit points by slamming into an adversary with a harder punch. Although candidates typically do not use physical force, their tactics are almost equally as vicious as violent warfare. Obama, of course, remains the peacemaker in this situation. While Coulter and Clinton throw atomic bombs at each other, Obama quietly protests the war.
Despite the America support for the war, imagine Obama has taken the nation by storm. Suddenly, every city awaits his arrival. Clinton and McCain are making their respective tours around the United States. Still, Obama is the only one receiving attention. Clinton has become irate. She has served Americans politically since Watergate. Why does she not receive praise like Obama. Arriving at each new city, Clinton expects to be greeted respectfully. Instead, Clinton travels from the airport to the hotel without even catching a reporter's eye. Clinton weeps at home.
