First off, for any small business to be successful you have to have a simple yet powerful business plan. Set goals and keep in mind that it is a business, keep it that way. You must be professional in every aspect of the business making sure all of your finances are in order.
In this business plan you must have a effective marketing strategy along with a money management plan. An effective way to establish a money management plan is written out and looked over by all of the top members in this small business. make sure everything makes sense and is cost effective(for example: look at your projected revenue and your projected advertising costs then make sure your not over spending). That is just a simple example, but it is one that should be looked over.
A product is another important side or a small business. Make sure you have a product that people actually want. Research the demands for the product and make sure you meet them. Many different people are looking for many different things, make sure you have one that is in demand. Make sure it is something that you can advertise easily, this will save you money in the long run.
You should have an accountant to go over this with you and to make sure you are going to be in a safe financial place at the end of the month/year. Should you keep them on full time or bring them in on a monthly basis is up to you. An accountant can be a valuable asset to rise and fall of you small business.
Keep your business accounts and finances separate from your personal finances. If you go to lunch for business keep it business, put it on a business account. Receipts are almost as important as the business itself. Keep all receipts come tax time that can be the difference between you paying money to the IRS or getting money back for them.
In ending, do your homework and make a plan when looking into a small business. Make sure you have a strong plan and management. If you lose money something needs to change obviously. Find out what parts of your business are weak and which are strong enough. Good luck and hope this help in some way.
