The origin of those mysterious crop circles

The appearance of crop circles in farmers fields have been the subject of much debate over the years, with a number of different theories as to their origin.

THEORY ONE
The dominant theory is that crop circles are created because of alien craft landing on earth. There is some merit in this, based upon the fact that we all know aliens travel in flying saucers (without cups or spoons of course). However, there are one or two tricky questions that the proponents of this theory need to answer.

1) Why are there no burn or tyre marks? Alternatively, is this because all aliens are law-abiding and do not wheel spin from a standing start.
2) Why do they never stay for the day? Is this because they cannot find cheap accommodation, or that they are allergic to sunlight, or maybe because there are no alien cash machines (Must remember to bring that up with my bank manager)
3) Why are there no alien footprints? Might this be because they walk on air (after all no-one has found any evidence of running water in space)?

THEORY TWO
The second most popular theory is that crop circles are manmade. Of course, this is quite feasible, especially in view of the size of the circles. Let us just pose a few questions on this theory as well.

1) How many people does it take to make a crop circle? With their size, one would suppose it takes a fair number. Yet, there appears to be no paths leading through the rest of the crops. Perhaps they take their shoes and socks off first.
2) How do these people see in the dark to make a perfect circle? Does one person stand in the centre with a length of string and another run around in a circle, which is ever diminishing? Alternatively, perhaps they use floodlights that are undetectable to the human eye, as the farmer and his animals are never disturbed.

These are the two most popular theories but as you may have guessed both are not true. We all know that crop circles are created by stars. After all, they need somewhere to lie down and rest from their constant orbits.
