The liver is one of the most important organs in the body because it filters out toxic chemicals and breaks them down into compounds that can safely be transported around the body and eliminated. Many people have damaged livers without realizing it. In fact more than half of people over the age of 50 suffer from fatty degeneration of the liver (fatty liver).
There are usually no symptoms, but fatty liver is associated with being over weight and finding the weight difficult to lose, with excess weight concentrated around the belly, with cellulite and high cholesterol levels.
The liver is damaged by alcohol, liver infections, gall stones, inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, and by obesity. In today's world we are surrounded by toxins in the food, water, our own homes, and in the air we breathe. No wonder so many people have damaged livers.

The best natural sources of these are eggs, nuts, wheatgerm, liver and other organ meats, beans, seeds, and leafy green vegetables, so make sure these are regularly included in the diet.
Sprouts, especially alfalfa, are good for the digestion generally. They are very easy to grow yourself and of course much cheaper than buying them. They are packed with vitamins and minerals and add needed fiber to the diet. Toss sprouts on sandwiches, in casseroles, or in salads.
Fennel, beetroot, garlic and onions are also recommended foods for detoxifying the liver.
Ginger has a soothing effect on the digestive system and the liver, so add it to casseroles and stews. Adding ginger to any bean recipe also prevents any flatulence the beans might produce,
