Reflections: Hope

Why art thou cast down, oh my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Whether you believe in God or not, you have to admit that when all hope is gone, God is who we turn to. Even the most devout unbeliever will cry out "Oh God", when an unexpected mishap strikes.

So what is hope? In the New Testament of the Bible, it is really an expectation. In our daily lives we can expect good from evil if we are looking in the right direction. God speaks to all of us daily but our lack of focus, and lack of awareness prevent us from hearing. If we look in the right places, we'll find hope. Let's take the example of food.

Certain foods, resemble the particular organ that they are meant to service. For example walnuts look like a brain and help to develop neuron transmitters for proper brain function. Grapes are found in clusters that resemble a heart and individually resemble blood cells. Their function is to revitalize the blood. There is a lot more to this but the point is that God has provided us with signs all around our very lives to help us to deal with hopelessness and every other issue that there is. We just have to look in the right place.

Many years ago I was called the 'signs and wonders man', in my Church because I took everything to have been a sign. Indeed I may have been a little nuts then, but I was on the right track. God does provide signs in our lives, nature itself proves it. Not just nature, but we have been fashioned in the image of God. This should tell us something about the nature of our creator...whether you believe or not. Whole food patterns resemble body organs or physical functions that they are meant to service, we were created in God's image. There is a pattern, or a sign at work in our lives, physically and spiritually. We can be healthy and hopeful in the face of hopelessness if we utilize the proper tools.

There can be hope out of hopelessness, sometimes it is a matter of reversing our outlook. We all too often get caught up in the tangible circumstance and forget the intangibles. Air is intangible and without it we cannot breathe. Yet we take it for granted, unless we have asthma. Love is the intangible pattern that resides within us.

Like walnuts help brain function, and carrots enhance the eyes, God (in whose image we were made) will provide hope and more. It would be wise for us to 'Hope thou
