There are many animals that fall into this broad category, reptiles, chimps, rare monkeys, ferrets; these are all examples of exotics. Many people believe that exotic animals come from developing countries and that they are being removed from the wild, but in most cases this is not true.
I don't think there is any good place to buy exotic mammals but I do know of great places to buy reptiles online. There are many breeders in America that sell exotic reptiles such as snakes and lizards. I own many "exotic reptiles". I have purchased two snakes from Petco and about 20 other lizards and snakes from a breeder in Florida. As an exotic reptile owner I make sure my animals are 100% healthy before I add them to my collection.
I have found that the reptiles I get from the breeder is of much better quality than Petco's because Petco gets there pets from a mass breeder where as the breeder in Florida only breeds a small amount of great specimens. I buy from a place called Nature Coast Exotics, ill run you though the process I go to there web site and see a Chinese water dragon and buy him/her. It gets shipped to my door overnight, the animal is usually put in a pillow cloth, or a deli cup with a heat or cold pack based on the temperature. When I get the animal I put it in a small cage and take him to the vet the next day so that he can get a clean bill of health.
I know some people may think that shipping a animal in a box is horrible but I find that the animals are less stressed than the ones you get at Petco because they don't see knew people every day that tape on the glass. I'm sure there are many great breeders out there for everyone but I wouldn't buy off anyone that you don't know, or wasn't recommended by someone you know, or can't see the animals living condition. There are many very bad breeders that "over breed" so I advise you to try and go visit the breeder and I would say never ever deal with a corporation. Exotic animals are rare and can be very expensive so I advise you to do lots of research before buying an animal, also make sure you have money put away for vet bills or other unexpected expenses. There is no reason why you should feel badly for buying or owning an exotic pet, as long as it is CB, captive breed meaning its parents also came from a Breed animal, and not snatched out of the wild.
