fish and aquatic animals. Great fly fishermen take advantage of this knowledge and practice their presentation skills for each type of bait in its proper season. A great book for reference is, Trout Flies: Proven Patterns by Gary LaFontaine.

Some guidelines for using tied feather and fur flies are as follows. Use Nymphs to bottom fish in the winter. In the winter, trout are going to stay deep in the holes at the bottom of a lake. Contrary to popular theory, they do eat in the wintertime. Nymphs are great bottom fishing baits in the winter.

Spring opens up your bait choices quite a bit because the fish begin to move around a bit, coming closer to the surface as metabolism increases. Nymphs, Fish eggs, Power Bait should still be used on the bottom. But on the top you'll have the choice of adult flies, such as mayflies or Dragon flies. These will continue to be productive if you change them to fit each emerging type and will work well through fall.

Once the warm summer temperatures hit, small fish, crayfish, and large adult fly designs will do the trick. Keeping you're eyes on the surface of the water and watching temperatures will assist your timing for choosing the right baits. In the insect and animal kingdom, temperatures initiate most of the life cycles we observe. If you see Mayflies still emerging in June, continue to use mayflies on the surface.

As with fly fishing, the season will dictate what's on the menu for power baits as well. Power baits are scientifically designed to smell and taste like natural insects, worms, fish, eggs and other aquatic animals. They are desired for fishing throughout winter, spring, summer and fall.

But remember, using good bait at a bad time will decrease your chances of success. For example, if you throw a power bait worm on and sink it to the bottom too early in the spring, it won't draw any positive attention. But if you drop it late in spring or early in summer, you'll get some action. The same goes for fish egg, dough ball power baits and any lure created for trout fishing. Some are natural in the spring, but alien in the fall.

Do a little research, apply a little common sense, and these brilliantly manufactured baits will be sure-fire, killer baits as advertised. But use them when the time is right. When your choice of bait aligns with what is emerging in the natural, you've got a winning combination. If you practice this rule, you will have found what the best bait for trout fishing is.
