Best baits for trout fishing

Fishing for trout seems to have become a popular adventure all across the country and all over the world. Now there are two distinctive and widely separated fields of trout fishing. Fishing for farm raised trout and fishing for wild trout are as different as night and day.

In our modern times, it's very common to find a pond or lake stocked with industrial farm-raised trout. Farm raised or pond stocked trout are not that particular about diet. They can be caught on some of the most outlandish baits. Kernels of Canned Corn, Preserved Salmon Eggs, Mini-Marshmallows, cheese chunks, rolled up bread balls and dead worm chum to name a few can be effective. But for catching wild trout, these off the counter and home made baits will just not do.

When trying to determine the best bait for trout fishing in the wild, keep in mind the natural and seasonal eating habits of these very particular and finicky creatures. Trout are prone to stay with the seasonal bounty that their natural habitat faithfully dishes up. The words to focus on here are NATURAL and SEASONAL. Understanding this will give an angler half a chance at a catch; and maybe, every once in a while, a great day of fishing.

Successful trout fishermen are in a league of their own, because they have learned that their success depends on skill and education. Failure to catch a fish is never due to a lack of bait options. The problem is that there are too many bait options. If you have ever found yourself standing looking over for the latest, greatest, and guaranteed to kill-em bait designs, you know what I am talking about. You may be staring at a well made lure or fly design that has a proven track record for hooking trout. But if you're fishing in autumn and this design is based on a spring hatchling, nymph or fly, it's going to be a long and disappointing day-trip.

To be sure, experienced trout fishermen know that the correct bait is the most critical element in the fishing trip. The novice has no such knowledge. He will simply show up, look into his tackle box and ask himself, "Now if I were a trout, what would I,..." But the true veteran will know exactly what the trout will be eating that day and pack up accordingly.

Insects may be at the bottom of the food chain, but they are on the top of the charts when it comes to the preferential diet of trout. Trout love bugs and especially aquatic bugs. Trout mainly feed on aquatic flies in most of their metamorphic states. The bigger fish will take hatchlings, small
