One is the epitome of universal power, and the other exudes the zenith of human potential. The battle is so controversial, and has been debated so many times that placing these two on opposing sides to comic book fans equates historians reviewing the battle between the Spartans and Athenians. There will never be one clear winner, as opinions, trends, and even the character themselves are subject to change in the course of time, but that doesn't stop trying to analyze the characters now. When a versus thread like this is questioned, many factors need to be contributed and realized to give credible credentials for each of the characters. It must be debated scholarly, as if these characters were real, in order to reach a decisive conclusion. It is because these characters have influenced so many lives and have been around for so long that they've become modern day Greek Gods and cultural icons, and thus any conversation including them must be treated as such.
Versus: In a blunt hand to hand combat, the characters have obviously different stats. Though some consider Superman to be rather dim witted, it's a common mistake to make to view someone who can perform feats worthy of mount Olympus lacking in the mental area, as it provides a certain weakness and handicap that allows the character to become more vulnerable. Contrary to common perception, though, the kryptonian mind is naturally very sharp and places the human mind to shame just by existing. In the comics Superman has shown to display photographic memory, the ability to calculate math problems in minutes that would take a college professor a few hours to solve, and has outwitted even the likes of Lex Luthor when his pure power couldn't suffice. It is in this regard that Superman can run maps around all of his JLA friends in the intelligence department, even Superman. But what distinguishes the two is that Batman is completely paranoid and can be somewhat duplicitous by his very nature which can make him a more formidable foe. When discussing a vs. debate such as this one, the character's key personalities have to be considered as well. Superman WILL hold back against Batman in fear of seriously injuring him, while Batman will most likely utilize whatever resource is at his disposal. Batman is always laced with kryptonite in his utility belt, and in terms of preparation he has the likes of Lex Luthor beaten, let alone that of Superman.
Yet, logic, no matter how difficult it is to apply into a world
