Should we even consider a race-based school? Umm...NO! That concept is completely ludicrous to me. We've been spending the past how many years trying to correct the past mistakes we've made, and now we're going to do it all over again!
From my own experiences as a white person in a multi-racial school, it seems like the white and black students are finally losing some of the tension that was once over-whelming. Canada is meant to be a multi-cultural country, where we're all suppose to live together in peace, how can we possibly do that if we're separated by our different races?
Also, what happens to the white youth that live in the same neighborhood, and grow up with the black youth? Will they not be allowed to attend the same school at all? Are we basically telling them not to have any type of relationship with them, because once school starts up you won't even see them? Where will this end? Will we have different libraries, museums, book stores?
Instead of creating a different school for people of different races, why not just add new programs for them. Instead of celebrating one month a year (February) to African culture, why not have more programs so that anyone who chooses to can learn as much as they want? Instead of spending money on a new school, spend it on books, scholarships, museums, and after school programs so that people of different races can chooses whether or not they want to learn more about their race.
Honestly, why stop there though? If the government plans to make a black segregated school, why not make one for every race out there? How will the Canadian Government possibly pay for that when they can barely keep the schools we have up and running? We constantly hear on the news about "Budget Cut-Backs", and how we can't afford new books, or we have to cut back on how much we can give to students attending Secondary Education. Canada already has one of the worst programs for Secondary Education. Dalhousie University, in Nova Scotia, for example has one of the highest tuition rates IN THE WORLD!
Personally, I think the government needs to spend more time dealing with current issues in our system, rather than creating new ones for itself. Especially when the bad outweighs the good so heavily.
The only thing segregated schools will possibly do is further alienate us from people of different races.
